FSU business students to get world-class lesson

When it comes to learning the ropes of world finance and investing, who better to learn from than one of the world's richest and most successful financiers?

That's just what a group of students in Florida State University's College of Business will get on Monday, March 22, when they sit down for a 90-minute question and answer session with Warren E. Buffett, chairman and chief executive officer of Berkshire Hathaway, Inc.

Lauren Kopco, an insurance major and president of the Florida State Insurance Society, asked Buffett in December whether he would come to FSU or allow a group of students from FSU's nationally ranked risk management and insurance program to visit him. Within days Kopco got an enthusiastic invitation from Buffett — whom Forbes magazine listed as the  second richest man in the world in 2003 — for the students to visit his corporate headquarters in Omaha, Neb. The group is flying to Omaha on Saturday morning.

"It's such an honor to be invited to meet with Mr. Buffett," Kopco said. "We look forward to gaining some of the knowledge and understanding that makes him so successful in our growing business world and learning from his experiences."

Kopco thought of writing Buffett after Prof. James Carson in FSU's department of risk management/insurance, real estate and business law took her and other members of the insurance society to the Berkshire Hathaway annual meeting last May. Buffett and Carson are both graduates of the University of Nebraska.

"Mr. Buffett is truly one of the great educators, and he is being so generous with his time to allow the FSU students to meet with him," said Carson. "This will be a wonderful experience for them."
