Veterans' sons return to FSU to honor World War II memories

Last weekend the FSU campus witnessed a unique tribute to the veterans of World War II.

Eleven sons of World War II veterans, wearing replicas of their fathers' military uniforms and manning a simulated World War II encampment, banded together as a squad for "Service & Sacrifice,"  a series of events to pay tribute to the WWII generation and to promote awareness of FSU's Institute on World War II and the Human Experience.

The squad, made up of FSU alumni and supporters, and led by Miami-Dade Police Department Sgt. Kevin Dougherty (FSU 1974), was featured at a Friday evening invitation-only President's Club event with a World War II theme.

A simulated World War II encampment at Florida State University's Alumni Association facilities on West Tennessee St. was staged Saturday, during the Alumni Association's HangTime event prior to the FSU/UVa game.

The encampment featured displays provided by the WWII Institute, plus items from the Tallahassee Army-Navy Store and a World War II jeep owned by Joanna Kenyon.

Following the simulated encampment, the "Service & Sacrifice" squad was recognized during halftime.

The concept of the "Service & Sacrifice" tribute came from Dougherty. His father, Paul Dougherty, was an official army photographer with the Ninth Air Force Signal Corps. Paul Dougherty's photos are part of the collection of the Institute on World War II and the Human Experience.

"As the World War II generation fades away, it's vital to preserve the memories and artifacts of the war that defined their time. FSU's Institute on World War II and the Human Experience provides a repository so that generations to come will be able to understand and learn from this era in history," Dougherty said. "The Institute is a vital resource and needs support from all of us."

Other members of the squad, many of them current or former employees of the Miami-Dade Police Department, are:

… Bruce Buchmann, a 30-year MDPD veteran, now an executive with the Transportation Security Administration at the Palm Beach International Airport. His dad, Lester Buchmann, served on ships in the Atlantic theater.

… First Lt. David Evans (FSU 1978), a 20-year MDPD employee. His dad, Lee Evans was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division (the "Screaming Eagles). David's father-in-law, Edward Connor III, was a West Point graduate assigned to the U.S. Army Air Corps. Col. Connor's last duty assignment was as the U.S. Air Force ROTC Commander at FSU ('69-'73).

… Lt. Dan Galyon (FSU 1971), a 31-year MDPD member. His father, Larry Galyon, was assigned to the 7th Air Force in the Pacific  Theater.

… Officer Bill Kinnebrew, a U.S. Navy veteran, with the MDPD for 24 years. His father, William Kinnebrew, served in the 91st Anti-Aircraft Artillery group, Third Army, in the European Theater of Operations.

… Gary Kusiak (FSU 1975) founded his own contracting firm with his father, Sgt. Edward Kusiak, a 3rd Infantry Division Squad leader for the U.S. Army.

… Lt. Michael Lytle, a 20-year MDPD employee assigned to the Airport District Station. His dad, Richard Lytle, was a Navy seaman who served aboard the U.S.S. Richmond. He later enlisted in the Army and served for 22 years.

… Joe Mitock, Jr. (FSU 1975), founder of a St. Petersburg insurance agency. His father, Joseph Mitock, who was excused from service because he had several dependent children, worked on the Lake Terminal Railroad, shipping war materials.

… John Naf (FSU 1975), an executive with Fed Ex. His father-in-law, Robert Hern, served in the Army Air Corps Fourth Air Force, stationed at bases across the Southwest.

… Capt. Mick O'Connor (FSU 1975), an Airbus A-300 captain for Fed Ex. His dad, Dick O'Connor, was assigned to the Sixth Marine Division and remained in the Marine Corps Reserves while practicing law in Miami.

… Officer Curtis Riley, a 23-year MDPD Airport District employee. His father, James Riley, was a career chief petty officer with the Navy, serving in both the Atlantic and Pacific  theaters.
