ANDEE HUY, GARNET & GOLD KEY PRESIDENT, PRESENTS THE OGLESBY AWARD TO MARK BERTOLAMI.
FSU Garnet & Gold Key presents '04 Oglesby Award to Bertolami

Florida State University's Mark C. Bertolami, director of facilities planning, has received the prestigious 2004 Ross Oglesby Award, an honor bestowed upon a faculty or staff member who has, for 10 years or more, exemplified the highest order of integrity, service and commitment to students and the university.

The Ross Oglesby Award, which originated in 1973, is sponsored by student-run Garnet and Gold Key Leadership Honorary, the oldest organization of its kind at FSU, and is presented at the annual homecoming awards brunch.

"Mr. Bertolami's influence spans every facet of campus life," said Andee Huy, Garnet and Gold Key's current president.

"As the 'keeper of the Master Plan,' which includes construction of a new classroom building, biology and psychology centers and numerous other projects, it's his insightful and practical facility planning that will perpetuate FSU's rich history to future generations. In addition to this far-reaching impact, Mr. Bertolami remains true to the questions, cares and concerns of FSU students," said Huy.

The Oglesby winner is chosen based on nominations from the recipient's co-workers. Bertolami's nod came from Scott Atwell, director of marketing and electronic media, who lauds the facilities planning guru for his enormous impact on the design and implementation of everything from residence halls, Leach Center, parking garages and University Center to the medical school, Student Life Center and intramural fields.

"In addition, he has led the effort to make this a more pedestrian-friendly campus by closing off Woodward Avenue and Pensacola Street and re-routing traffic around, rather than through, the campus," said Atwell. "These improvements require both political and logistical acumen, and Mark has been instrumental in finding common ground among multiple campus interests, then leveraging that consensus for approval from county planners and funding from state leaders."

John Carnaghi, vice president for Finance and Administration, offered high praise for Bertolami, whom he described as "an ideal employee."

"Mark Bertolami is an extraordinary individual. He's competent, bright, articulate and personable. In addition to all these wonderful attributes, I always know he can find the 'perfect solution' to any problem I send him," said Carnaghi.

Associate Vice President for Facilities Dennis Bailey also described Bertolami in glowing terms.

"He's always willing to share his knowledge about the history, current state and future vision for FSU facilities, and has that unique ability to be both informative and entertaining at the same time. Mark has certainly earned the Ross Oglesby Award, and more."

"It is hard for me to imagine anyone who is a more passionate and effective ambassador for Florida State University," said Bailey.
