FSU religion professor will use NEH award to write on religious conflict
BY LIBBY FAIRHURST
A Florida State University professor has won a 2005 National Endowment for the Humanities fellowship that will enable him to complete his forthcoming book, "Religious Intolerance in America: A History of Hatred and Forgetting."
The book by John Corrigan -- Edwin S. Gaustad professor of religion, professor of history and director of graduate studies in religion at FSU -- argues that Americans have willfully screened from national memory the long, sad history of religious intolerance in their own country and, as a result, have found it difficult to understand religious conflicts elsewhere.
The NEH fellowship process is highly competitive, with about 13 percent of applicants funded annually across a wide range of disciplines in the humanities. Corrigan's "Religious Intolerance in America" will join together the leading themes of his previous books on American religious history and religion and emotion.
"I'm delighted to be able to dedicate a year to research and writing to bring my history of intolerance to completion. Already I look forward to teaching more on this subject when I return," said Corrigan, who also directs FSU's Institute for the Study of Emotion, which promotes scholarly collaboration in the investigation of emotion as represented in social, religious, political, medical, commercial and legal arenas.
According to Corrigan, Americans generally believe that since the ratification of the Constitution, religions have more or less peacefully coexisted in America and have done so better than in most other places. He contends, however, that the last 200 years of American religious history also have been marked by frequent, violent clashes -- including mass murder, large-scale arson and full military engagements -- between American citizens belonging to different religious groups.
"Americans won't fully understand the current global religious crisis until they come to terms honestly with our own conflicted past," said Corrigan.
Corrigan, who earned his doctorate from University of Chicago and has served as regular or visiting faculty at Harvard, the University of Virginia, Oxford University and others, recently marked another major scholarly milestone.
As co-editor of Church History: Studies in Christianity and Culture -- for 75 years the leading academic journal in the history of Christianity and the official publication of the American Society of Church History -- he played a key role in the publication's relocation last fall from Duke University to FSU. He'll share editing duties with Amanda Porterfield, FSU's Robert E. Spivey professor of religion.
In addition to his work on church history, Corrigan holds the position of editor for the "Chicago History of American Religion" book series (University of Chicago Press) and the Oxford Handbook of Religion and Emotion, and acts as advisory editor to several other journals.
Among the many major publications Corrigan has authored or co-authored are books such as "Religion in America"; "Jews, Christians, Muslims" and "Emotion and Religion." He has also produced a study of religion and emotion in 19th century America, "Business of the Heart," and is currently writing an overview of emotion, religion and capitalism since the 16th century.
"The NEH award to Professor Corrigan reflects well-deserved recognition of his past accomplishments and the relevance of his present project," said FSU College of Arts and Sciences Dean Donald J. Foss. "I'm very pleased for him, for FSU, and for the wider community because 'Religious Intolerance in America' is going to be an extremely important book." |
