Wetherell kicks off March of Dimes campaign

FSU President T.K. Wetherell will be leading the Tallahassee area's 2006 initiative to fight prematurity and birth defects. As honorary chairman of the March of Dimes, Wetherell hosted a recent reception at the President's Box to kick off the year's fundraising events.

Wetherell noted that one in eight babies is born early, and premature birth is the Number One killer of newborns. The March of Dimes, with a 50+-year record of success, beginning with the development of the polio vaccine and important advances in preventing and correcting birth defects, is now championing the prevention of prematurity.

Also speaking at the reception were Seminole sportscaster Gene Deckerhoff, Big Bend March of Dimes Chair Michelle Robleto, Sen. Burt Saunders and Rep. Curtis Richardson.

"Over the decades March of Dimes research has brought us miracles," said Wetherell, whose granddaughter Emily was born early. "With the help of FSU supporters, it will bring us more miracles and help us solve the mysteries of premature birth.I am pleased to help the March of Dimes lead the fight to bring healthy babies into this world."

First on Wetherell's calendar is WalkAmerica, set for April 22 at Cascades Park. Wetherell encourages all FSU supporters to participate in the event to meet and exceed the goal of $250,000.

Next on Wetherell's March of Dimes agenda is a special football challenge. The FSU president announced that he would contribute a dime for each yard the FSU football team gains during the 2006 season and urged all Seminole fans to join him in "T.K.'s Dime-a-Yard Challenge."
