JOELE DENIS
FSU freshman is top collegiate speaker

Florida State University freshman Joele Denis of Hollywood, Fla., recently won the title of best novice collegiate speaker at a national speech and debate competition.

Denis entered eight individual events at the 24th annual Novice National Speech and Debate Tournament in Rome, Georgia, where he earned an appearance in the final round in seven of the events and won three event championships.

His events were informative speaking, oral interpretation, prose interpretation, duo interpretation, impromptu speaking, poetry interpretation, dramatic interpretation and after-dinner speaking.

"Joele is one of the most talented students to compete for FSU," said Robert Aronoff, co-director of forensics. "As good as he is, he's only a freshman, which means he will get better and stronger as his grasp of the events matures."

This is the second time in only four years that an FSU freshman has earned the title of the nation's best novice collegiate speaker.

"Joele came to us with loads of talent and even more potential," Aronoff said. "Now he's reaping the rewards of mixing that talent with determination and hard work. He has truly earned his success."
