The FSU Class of 1956 came back to campus last weekend to celebrate the golden anniversary of their graduation.

Of the original nearly 1300 graduates, 71 from the Class of '56 participated in Spring Alumni Weekend. The class was inducted into the Emeritus Alumni Society, which includes hundreds of Seminoles who graduated before 1956. Joining the Class of '56 for the weekend were alumni who graduated as early as 1935.

Two FSU grads who live in Tallahassee assumed the leadership for the Class of 1956 celebration - Tommy Waits and Jim Joanos, both of whom have long been actively involved in programs and events sponsored by the FSU Alumni Association. At one point in his career, Tommy Waits served as the executive director of the organization, and Jim Joanos has been its chairman.

President of the Emeritus Alumni Association is Bridget Chandler of Tallahassee, who welcomed more than 225 alumni and guests to campus for a busy schedule of tours, the spring football game, award ceremonies and banquets.

About 20 of the alumni-all former performers--were honored at a performance of the FSU Flying High Circus.

For Jim Joanos, the gathering of his classmates after 50 years is a milestone he looked forward to with a sense of accomplishment as well as nostalgia.

Alumni traveled to Tallahassee from as far away as California, New York, Texas and Virginia. Though many of the participants still reside in Florida, or have elected to retire here, a significant number had careers that took them across the country and abroad.

The Spring Alumni Weekend offered opportunities for participants to experience campus life, see various city attractions and explore the many new buildings, sculptures and other facilities that have been added to the campus in recent years.
