Students, faculty aim to wow Big Apple with 'FSU in NYC' arts talent showcase
BY LIBBY FAIRHURST
Some of the best ambassadors of the acclaimed visual and performing arts programs at Florida State University will take to the stages of New York City May 1-3, 2006, for the third annual "FSU in NYC" arts talent showcase.
For three nights in the spotlight at top performance venues such as Carnegie Hall, a contingent of hopeful students and seasoned faculty from three FSU colleges will join forces to show off world-class talent under the watchful gaze of talent agents, discerning Big Apple patrons and FSU alumni.
They say if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere. Because New York is the heart of industries such as theatre and publishing and home to agents who can help make - or break - a budding fine arts career, FSU in NYC is orchestrated to give ambitious students an optimal entrée to industry professionals right in their own big-city backyard.
This year's showcase will include ensemble stage performances crafted by FSU's music theatre and acting programs - part of the College of Visual Arts, Theatre and Dance - featuring each student actor in both leading and supporting roles; the screening of award-winning short films written, directed and produced by emerging filmmakers from the university's College of Motion Picture, Television and Recording Arts -- also known as The Film School; and a chamber music concert at Carnegie Hall performed by nationally known faculty musicians from the FSU College of Music.
For the growing community of New York area alumni, currently more than 3,300 strong, the upcoming performances interspersed with several receptions will offer ample chances to reconnect with their alma mater both on stage and off.
FSU College of Music faculty will dazzle Carnegie Hall audiences beginning at 8 p.m. on May 3 with "An Evening of Classical Chamber Music" in the palatial Weill Recital Hall. The evening's performance will include a diverse body of classical chamber works and modern instrumental arrangements by composers ranging from Bach to Fats Waller.
Senior-year students from FSU's music theatre and acting programs will vie for industry attention May 1 and 2, respectively, at the Women's Theatre Project, Julia Miles Theatre, 424 W. 55th St.; performances are scheduled at 4 and 7:30 p.m. both days.
On May 2, the internationally recognized FSU Film School will host "An Evening of Shorts - The Best of FSU Student Films for 2005" (including the winner of a 2006 Collegiate Television Academy Award) beginning at 8 p.m. in the Angelika Film Center, 18 W. Houston St.
Also on May 2, an invitation-only luncheon hosted by College of Visual Arts, Theatre and Dance Dean Sally McRorie will feature none other than world-renowned Suzanne Farrell, one of the most extraordinary and influential ballerinas of the late-20th century and now, an FSU Eppes Professor of Dance and a recipient of 2005 Kennedy Center Honors.
All performances and screenings are open to the public and most are free of charge. Tickets to the College of Music's Carnegie Hall performance are $10 for general admission or $8 for seniors, students and alumni. The FSU alumni reception scheduled for May 3 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Frederick's (8 W. 58th St.) requires an R.S.V.P. and a $25 charge for FSU alumni and Seminole Club of NYC members; it's $30 for non-members.
